This is something we’ve never discussed here, but many of our writers were chomping at the bit to share with us what their favorite technology movie is. What do you think it is? Follow along to find out what our writers ranked as the best when we asked them, “What is your favorite technology/artificial intelligence movie?”

Our Opinion

Are you ready to find out what our writers named as their number one technology/artificial intelligence movie? Ex Machina. This indie sci-fi thriller that was written and directed by Alex Garland stars Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac. The 2015 story follows a very human-like robot who is capable of thought and consciousness. It won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Vikander’s performance was also honored with several award nominations.

Derrik notes that “the movie explains really well how artificial intelligence could become human as well as the ethics involved in making artificial beings“. Damien loves it as well, and both agree that it always makes them think. While Jeffry also loves Ex Machina, his favorite is Her. He thinks “the writer thought about Siri and what’s possible when he wrote the story.” He sees it as chilling because he believes we are on the way there in the not-so-distant future, “where life is so lonely and our only companion is the AI personal assistant.” Alex, too, votes for Ex Machina, but he also enjoys Hackers, “mostly for that Looney-Tunes representation of the Internet as a series of three-dimensional buildings that you fly through.” He also enjoys that Penn Jillette appears in the film.

Christopher votes for I, Robot as well as 2001: A Space Odyssey. I have to say the latter is my favorite as well as the granddaddy of them all, released back in 1968. Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s story takes artificial intelligence to a place that goes beyond what anyone in that decade would have thought of. Following that, it’s not too difficult to see how Apple came up with Siri.
